There are many challenges faced by the Millennial Generation (currently ranging from 23 – 40 years old) in today's society. According to Gallup, Millennials are the largest generational cohort making up 75% of the workforce by 2025. For the first time in history, up to five generations are working alongside each other in a typical company. Dr. Tim Elmore in his research, states that “interactions between people from different generations can resemble a cross-cultural relationship.” The Millennial generation grew up in a very different time from the predecessor Generation X or Baby Boomers. Over the last several years, Millennials have garnered a reputation of being ambitious, outspoken, and knowing what they want, but in reality, they are not always equipped to deal with the stress and anxiety that comes with this sense of confidence.

Generally, as a young generation, Millennials are seen as confrontational, but at the same time, they are confrontation-avoidant. For example, their generation has been labelled as not having any fear of quitting a job they do not like, while being reluctant to ask authority figures for what they want — choosing instead to quietly move on to greener pastures. This is where we, as People Leaders, can make a difference by providing Millennials with the necessary training and skills to help them succeed as we prepare to pass the baton of leadership to them over the next few years.

The “human skills” (or soft skills) that are often underappreciated and undertrained are crucial for success. As People Leaders, we need to train this young workforce in the skills of how to:

  • Have difficult conversations
  • Handle confrontations effectively
  • Give and receive feedback

By providing them with these skills, we are equipping them to excel and succeed in the future.

It is also imperative that we teach this generation of young people the skills required to:

  • Cope with stress and anxiety
  • Ask for help
  • Prioritize tasks

If we are successful in this knowledge transfer, we will help them lead a better and healthier life, both professionally and personally.
